A common joke among Trabant owners was that it could accelerate “from 0 to 100 in the same day”. A total of 3,069,099 “Trabbis” were produced in the Zwickau automotive works between 1958 and 1991. #OnThisDay in 1991, the last of its kind would roll off the production line.
For decades, it was regarded as the Volkswagen of East Germany. Children were placed on waiting lists to buy one by their parents at birth. With the collapse of the GDR and reunification, however, their sales numbers collapsed.
Production was ultimately stopped. Some fans remain loyal to the car even today, and in Germany there are still 200,000 of the cars in use.
