 キリストは復活された！まことに復活された！

正教会の伝統では、復活祭（イースター）を祝う際に、「キリストは復活された！」という挨拶に対し、「まことに復活された」（または「本当に復活された」）と返答します。

ギリシャ語の挨拶は「Christos Anesti!」（Χριστὸς ἀνέστη!）で、これに対し「Alithos Anesti!」（Ἀληθῶς ἀνέστη!）と返答します。これは復活と死に対する勝利を宣言するもので、通常40日間用いられます。

正教会の復活祭の挨拶　このフレーズは、イエスが死から復活し、死を克服したことを宣言するものです。復活祭（イースター）の40日間、日々の挨拶に代わる形で広く用いられます。

In Orthodox tradition, "Christ is Risen" is greeted with "Indeed He is Risen" (or "Truly He is Risen") to celebrate Pascha (Easter).

The Greek greeting is "Christos Anesti!" (Χριστὸς ἀνέστη!), answered with "Alithos Anesti!" (Ἀληθῶς ἀνέστη!), proclaiming the Resurrection and victory over death, typically used for 40 days. 

The Orthodox Paschal Greeting The phrase proclaims that Jesus has risen from the dead, overcoming death. It is used extensively during the 40 days of Pascha (Easter season), replacing daily greetings.

聖木曜日には、聖餐式、すなわち聖体拝領の秘跡の制定を記念します。キリストは、裏切り、逮捕、そして十字架刑の直前、「上の部屋」で弟子たちと最後の食事を共にされました。この聖餐式は、聖なる食事における食物と飲み物に、全く新しい意味を与えました。キリストはご自身をパンとぶどう酒と同一視されました。

「取って食べなさい。これはわたしの体です。…皆、飲みなさい。これは、罪の赦しのために多くの人のために流される、新しい契約のわたしの血です」（マタイによる福音書 26:26-28）。

🔸 Holy Thursday - The Mystical Supper 🍞🍷🔸

On Great and Holy Thursday, we also commemorate the Mystical Supper, and the institution of the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. Christ shared this final meal with His disciples in the ‘upper room’ shortly before His betrayal, arrest and crucifixion. This Mystical Supper gave a radically new meaning to the food and drink of the sacred meal. Christ identified Himself with the bread and wine:

“Take, eat; this is my body... Drink from it, all of you. For this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins” (Matthew 26:26-28).

We have learned to equate food with life because it sustains our earthly existence. In the Eucharist, the distinctively unique human food - bread and wine - becomes our gift of life. Consecrated and sanctified, the bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ. We do partake of the true body and blood of Christ. In the eucharistic meal, God enters into such a communion of life that He feeds humanity with His own being, while still remaining distinct.

In the words of St Maximos the Confessor, Christ “transmits to us divine life, making Himself eatable.” The great and divine mystery of the Holy Eucharist, which is at the centre of the life of the Church, allows us to partake directly in the divinity of Christ, and shatters the limitations of our createdness: “through these you may be partakers of the divine nature” (2 Peter 1:4). It is important to note that the Orthodox Church does not refer to this event as the “Last Supper”. Though this was the last meal Christ shared with His disciples before His crucifixion, He makes clear that they will feast together once again:

“But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom” (Matthew 26:29). In the icon, Saint John the Theologian is the closest disciple to the Lord, while Judas is seen dipping into the dish as Christ foretold: “He who dipped his hand with Me in the dish will betray Me” (Matthew 26:23).

🔸 Holy Thursday - The Washing of the Disciples’ Feet 💦🦶🔸

On Great and Holy Thursday, we commemorate Christ washing the feet of His disciples (John 13:2-17). In this striking scene, our Lord summarises the meaning of His ministry, manifests His perfect love, and reveals His profound humility. This event took place in the moments leading to His Passion, with the devil already having put it into the heart of Judas to betray Him. Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God, rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself.

He then proceeded to pour water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and wiped them with the towel with which he was girded. The Apostle Peter then said to Him, “Lord, are You washing my feet?” Jesus answered, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this.” The washing of feet was the lowest task of even a servant or a slave (let alone for the King of kings), and so Peter, seeking to prevent Christ from doing this, said, “You shall never wash my feet!” Jesus answered, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.”

In other words, Christ is saying, “If I am to raise you up to My level, I must first come down to yours.” Accepting the Saviour’s words, Peter replied, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!” In other words, Peter is saying, “If washing me is a measure of how close I am to You, then do not stop at my feet, I want the full body!” Having washed the feet of His disciples, Christ said, “and you are clean, but not all of you,” for He knew who would betray Him, and that this was soon to be.

By humbling Himself to wash the lowest part of His disciples, even of the one whom He knew would betray Him, Christ demonstrates, together with His suffering on the Cross, His greatest act of humility. Christ concludes this act with a message to His disciples which we should all reflect upon: “If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you”

「この病気は死に至るものではありません。むしろ、神の栄光のため、神の子がそれによって栄光を受けるためです。」

キリストは滞在していた場所にさらに二日間滞在し、その間にラザロは安らかに息を引き取りました。それからイエスは弟子たちにこう言われた。

「さあ、再びユダヤへ行こう。」

弟子たちは、ユダヤ人たちがつい最近イエスを石打ちにしようとしたことを知っていたので、イエスの身の安全を案じたが、イエスはこう言われた。

「私たちの友ラザロは眠っている。しかし、わたしは彼を起こすために行くのだ。」

🔸 The Saturday of Lazarus 🍙🔸

Today, the day before Palm Sunday, we commemorate the miracle of our Lord Jesus Christ raising Lazarus from the dead after he had lain in the grave for four days (John 11:1-45). Lazarus was from the village of Bethany in Judea. He and his sisters Mary and Martha were disciples of the Lord, faithfully ministering to Him, and were greatly loved by Him.

While Jesus was staying beyond the Jordan, He received a message from Mary and Martha that their brother was ill:

“Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick.” 

Hearing this news, He said:

“This illness does not lead to death; rather it is for God’s glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it”.

Christ stayed for 2 more days in the place where He was, during which time Lazarus reposed. He then said to His disciples: 

“Let us go to Judea again”.

Though they feared for His safety, knowing that the Jews there had recently sought to stone Him, Christ said to them:

“Our friend Lazarus sleeps, but I go that I may wake him up.”

When Christ arrived at Bethany, Lazarus had been in the tomb 4 days. His grieved sisters fell at Christ’s feet, weeping that their brother would not have died if He had come earlier. Christ assured them:

“Your brother will rise again... l am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.” 

When Mary and Martha and the Jews who came to comfort them brought Christ to the tomb of Lazarus, the Gospel tells us that “Jesus wept”. This moving verse reminds us of the fully human nature assumed by Christ, who like us mourns the death of His friend. When the stone was removed from the tomb, Christ prayed that the people may believe He had been sent by the Father. He then cried in a loud voice:

“Lazarus, come forth!”.

When Lazarus miraculously came out of his tomb bound in his burial shroud, Christ said to the people:

“Loose him, and let him go.”

Since many Jews who saw this converted to Christ, this initiated the revolt of the chief Priests and the Pharisees against the Savior. They also plotted to kill Lazarus, who fled to Cyprus and was ordained by the Apostles Paul and Barnabas as the island’s first Bishop.

🔸 Palm Sunday 🌿🫏 🔸

Today, the Sunday before Holy Pascha, we celebrate the joyous and Great Feast of the Entry of our Lord into Jerusalem, also known as Palm Sunday. This event is recorded in all four Gospels. Since Christ had raised Lazarus from the dead, many Jews who beheld this miracle came to believe in Him. Yet the chief priests and Pharisees, hardened in their hearts, gathered a council and plotted to put him to death.

At this time, many people gathered in Jerusalem for the Feast of Passover, and were eager to meet Christ; both because of His great works and teaching, and because they had heard of the resurrection of Lazarus. Five days before the Passover, Christ sent His disciples to fetch a colt (the foal of a donkey). Riding upon it, He who has Heaven for His throne entered the Holy City of Jerusalem. In this most humble manner, Christ fulfilled the prophecy:

“Behold, your King is coming to you, lowly, and sitting on a donkey, a colt, the foal of a donkey” (Zechariah 9:9).

The multitudes of people went out to meet Him with palm branches - which had long been used in the ancient world as a symbol of victory, for it was customary for the victors of athletic contests and wars to be honored with palms. The children of the Hebrews spread their garments before Him, and, cutting down branches, they laid them along the way and carried them in their hands. The people cried out as they went before Him:

“Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord, the King of Israel!”. 

In Luke’s account, the Pharisees in the crowd told Christ to rebuke His disciples for publicly proclaiming Him to be the Messianic King. But Christ responded to them:

“I tell you that if they should keep silent, the stones would immediately cry out” (Luke 19:40), revealing that even creation itself would bear witness and cry out praises to its Creator. Just as the people welcomed Christ into Jerusalem, we too must welcome our Lord and King into our hearts. As we commence Holy Week, we are reminded that the fleeting moments of joy that marked His triumphal entry soon give way to solemnity, for the world received and welcomed its King on His way to His Passion.

🔸 Holy Monday - The Cleansing of the Temple 𓎤 🐑🕊️🪙🔸

On Holy Monday, we also reflect on Christ Cleansing the Temple in Jerusalem. Though not explicitly mentioned in the hymnography for Holy Monday, this event is understood to have taken place at the same time as the Cursing of the Fig Tree, and shares the same message of warning directed toward those who reject Him and misuse the house of God. The Cleansing of the Temple is recorded in all the Gospels.

Having entered Jerusalem, Christ went to the Temple where He found merchants selling cattle and doves, and money changers doing business. Making a whip of chords, Christ drove them all out of the Temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers (John 2:15). As He did this, He said to them: “Take these things away! Do not make My Father’s house a house of merchandise!” (John 2:16). The Synoptic Gospels recall that He also said to them: “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a ‘den of thieves’” (Matthew 21:13, Mark 11:17, Luke 19:46).

John’s Gospel tells us that in this moment, the disciples recalled the words of the Old Testament: “Zeal for Your house consumed me, and the insults of those who disgraced You fell on me” (Psalm 68:10). Thus, the Psalmist’s words find their fulfilment in Christ, whose divine zeal for His Father’s house moved Him to drive out the merchants and money changers, restoring it to its true purpose as a place of prayer. While we experience anger as an impulsive, impetuous or emotional outburst, it is important to recognise that Christ’s ‘anger’ in this event is very different.

His response to the desecration of His Father’s house is controlled, zealous, and motivated purely by His love and desire for the salvation of His people. Though there in no mention of Christ physically using the whip mentioned in John 2:15, it serves as an important symbol of His authority. Just as the crack of a whip serves as a warning by herders to guide their cattle, so too does Christ’s righteous anger stand as a warning against the misuse of the sacred house of God by His own flock.

聖なる火曜日は、十人の乙女のたとえ（マタイによる福音書 25:1-13）を思い起こさせ、審判の日に花婿であるキリストを迎える準備を常に怠らず、警戒を怠らないようにと私たちに促します。このたとえ話の中で、キリストは天の御国を、油のランプを持って花婿を迎えに出かけた十人の乙女にたとえています。五人の乙女は賢く、ランプと共に器に油を用意していました。残りの五人の乙女は愚かで、ランプに油を入れていませんでした。

花婿がなかなか来なかったので、乙女たちは眠っていました。真夜中に、「見よ、花婿が来る。迎えに出なさい！」という叫び声が聞こえました。乙女たちは起き上がり、ランプの手入れをした。すると、愚かな乙女たちは賢い乙女たちに言った。「私たちのランプの油が消えそうなので、少し分けてください。」しかし、賢い乙女たちは答えた。「だめです。私たちとあなたたち両方に足りなくなるといけないので、むしろ売っているところへ行って、自分で買いなさい。」愚かな乙女たちが油を買いに行っている間に、花婿がやって来た。準備のできていた賢い乙女たちは花婿と共に婚礼の宴に入り、戸は閉められた。

愚かな乙女たちが婚礼の宴に着くと、「主よ、主よ、私たちに開けてください！」と叫んだ。しかし、イエスは彼女たちに答えた。「はっきり言っておくが、私はあなたたちを知らない。」キリストはこのたとえ話を厳粛な警告で締めくくっている。「だから、目を覚ましていなさい。人の子が来る日も時間も、あなたたちは知らないのだから」（マタイによる福音書25章13節）。婚礼の宴の閉ざされた戸（すなわちエデンの園）は死を象徴しており、死後には悔い改めはない。つまり、天国への扉を閉ざすのは神ではなく、私たち自身の怠惰と準備不足なのです。

🔸 Holy Tuesday - The Parable of the Ten Virgins 🪔🔸 

Great and Holy Tuesday calls us to remember the Parable of the Ten Virgins (Matthew 25:1-13), reminding us to be ever vigilant, watchful and prepared to receive Christ the Bridegroom on the Day of Judgement. In this parable, Christ says that the kingdom of heaven shall be likened to the ten virgins who took their oil lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of the virgins were wise, and prepared oil in their vessels with their lamps; the other five virgins were foolish, since they took their lamps without oil. 

While the bridegroom was delayed, the virgins slept. At midnight, a cry was heard: “Behold, the bridegroom is coming; go out to meet him!”. The virgins arose and trimmed their lamps, but the foolish said to the wise: “Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.” But the wise answered: “No, lest there should not be enough for us and you; but go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.” While the foolish virgins went to buy oil, the bridegroom came, and the wise virgins who were ready went with him to the wedding feast, and the door was shut.

When the foolish virgins arrived at the wedding, they cried: “Lord, Lord, open to us!” But He answered to them: “Assuredly, I say to you, I do not know you.” Christ concludes this parable with a solemn warning: “Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming” (Matthew 25:13). The shut door of the marriage feast (ie. the Garden of Eden) signifies death, after which there is no repentance; thus, it is not God but ourselves who close the door to Paradise through our own laziness and unpreparedness.

The God-bearing Fathers have assigned this parable to be read at this point in Great Week to call us to be ready to receive, while holding the lamps of our virtues, the heavenly Bridegroom, our Lord Jesus Christ, Who will come suddenly, either at the moment of our death, or at His Second Coming. St John Chrysostom explains that the lamp is the gift of virginity and purity, while the oil is philanthropy, kindheartedness, and almsgiving. Without sufficient oil, the lamp cannot burn.

聖なる水曜日、すなわち、高価な没薬の油でキリストに香油を塗った罪深い女の記念日に、聖油塗布の秘跡が執り行われます。この聖なる秘跡は、魂と体の癒し、そして罪の赦しのために捧げられ、信徒に注がれる神の限りない慈しみを示します。秘跡の儀式の終わりに、信徒は油を塗られ、魂と体の病を癒す神の恵みが一人ひとりに祈願されます。

聖油塗布の秘跡は、肉体的、精神的、霊的なあらゆる苦難において、キリストご自身が教会の奉仕を通して共にいてくださることを私たちに思い起こさせます。キリストは、その偉大な慈しみによって、私たちが苦しみに耐え、試練を乗り越え、死の時まで魂を準備できるよう力を与えてくださいます。キリストが十二使徒を遣わされた時、彼らに油を塗るという癒しの権威を委ねられました。「そこで彼らは出て行って、悔い改めるようにと宣べ伝え、多くの悪霊を追い出し、多くの病人に油を塗って癒した」（マルコ6:12-13）。

また、ヤコブの手紙にも、この聖餐に関する使徒の命令が記されています。「あなたがたの中に病んでいる人がいれば、教会の長老たちを招き、主の名によって油を塗って祈ってもらいなさい。信仰による祈りは病人を救い、主はその人を立ち上がらせてくださいます。もし罪を犯していたなら、赦されるでしょう。ですから、互いに罪を告白し合い、互いのために祈りなさい。そうすれば癒されるでしょう」（ヤコブ5:14-16）。

🔸 Holy Wednesday - The Sacrament of Holy Unction 🪔 🔸

On Great and Holy Wednesday, coinciding with the commemoration of the sinful woman who anointed Christ with costly myrrh oil, the service of the Sacrament of Holy Unction is conducted. This Holy Mystery is offered for the healing of soul and body, and for the forgiveness of sins, revealing the boundless mercy of God poured out upon the faithful. At the conclusion of the service of the Sacrament, the faithful are anointed with oil, and the grace of God, which heals the infirmities of soul and body, is invoked upon each person.

The Mystery of Holy Unction reminds us that in every affliction, whether physical, emotional, or spiritual, Christ Himself is present through the ministry of His Church. In His great mercy, He strengthens us to endure suffering, to overcome trials, and to prepare our souls even for the hour of death. When Christ sent out His Twelve Disciples, He entrusted them with authority to heal through anointing with oil: “So they went out and preached that people should repent. And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick, and healed them” (Mark 6:12-13). 

We also receive the apostolic command for this sacrament in the Epistle of James: “Is any among you sick, let him call for the presbyters of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed” (James 5:14-16).

聖なる木曜日、私たちは弟子ユダによる主イエス・キリストの逮捕と裏切りを思い起こします。この行為は、十字架刑と並んで、神への反逆と先祖代々の罪の悪が恐ろしい極みに達したことを示しています。聖餐式でキリストの体と血を受けた後、裏切り者は祭司長たちから約束されていた銀貨30枚を実行するために、すぐにその場を立ち去りました。

何という悲劇的な皮肉でしょう。かつて愛と交わりのしるしであったキスが、裏切りの手段となったのです。こうして、キリストが世の救いのために自ら進んで受難へと向かわれた時でさえ、人間の堕落の深さが明らかにされたのです。

 🔸 Holy Thursday - The Betrayal and Arrest of Christ ⚔️🔸

On Great and Holy Thursday, we recall the arrest and treacherous betrayal of our Lord Jesus Christ by the disciple Judas. In this act, along with the crucifixion, rebellion against God and the evils of ancestral sin reached their frightful limits. Upon receiving the Body and Blood of Christ at the Mystical Supper, the deceitful one left immediately to prepare to carry out the deed for which he had been promised 30 pieces of silver by the chief priests.

Meanwhile, Christ and His disciples went to the Garden of Gesthemane, where, in agony, sorrow, and distress, He contemplated the suffering and death which awaited Him. Since Christ went frequently with His disciples to the Garden of Gesthemane, Judas knew this place well. And so, as Christ prayed there and obediently accepted the will of His Father, Judas, having received a detachment of soldiers and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with his entourage bearing torches, swords and clubs.

The betrayer had given them a sign saying, “Whomsoever I shall kiss, He is the One; seize Him” (Matthew 26:48). Immediately, he went up to Jesus and said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed Him. As Christ said to Judas, “Friend, why have you come?”, He was seized by the soldiers. At that moment, the Apostle Peter, seeking to prevent the arrest, drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, whose name was Malchus, cutting off his right ear.

But Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink the cup which My Father has given Me?” Then Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and the elders who had come to Him: “Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me? I sat daily with you, teaching in the temple, and you did not seize Me. But all this was done that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled” (Matthew 26:55-56).

In a most tragic irony, the kiss, once a sign of love and fellowship, became the means of betrayal. Thus is revealed the depth of man’s fall, even as Christ goes willingly to His voluntary Passion for the salvation of the world.

このように、十字架の足元で、キリストの血は神秘的にアダムと全人類を罪の汚れから清めます。新しいアダムであるキリストは、十字架の木によって、木によって堕落した古いアダムを癒すのです。

🔸 Holy Friday - The Crucifixion ☦️ 🔸

On Holy Friday, we mourn the death of our Lord Jesus Christ. On this day, Christ is nailed to the cross, and the evils of man against the Creator reached their frightful climax. Even while enduring unimaginable pain and humiliation, Christ responded with mercy, praying for those who crucified Him: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.”

With the inscription “THE KING OF THE JEWS” placed above Him, the soldiers and chief priests mocked Him, saying: “He saved others; but cannot save Himself. If He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe Him.” Standing by the Cross were the Virgin Mary, who beheld with great sorrow the suffering of her Son, together with Mary the wife of Clopas, Salome, Mary Magdalene, and John the Theologian.

The criminal crucified with Him on his left blasphemed, saying: “If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us.” But the wise thief on His right, Saint Dismas, rebuked him and confessed: “We receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done nothing wrong… Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.” Jesus said to him: “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.” As darkness fell over the land, Christ revealed the fullness of His humanity, crying out: “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” Yet even in this, He remained obedient to the Father unto the end.

As Jesus cried with a loud voice, He gave up His spirit. Then the veil of the temple was torn in two, and the earth quaked. When the centurion Longinus pierced His side, blood and water gushed out, signifying the outpouring of the Lord’s sacraments on behalf of mankind: the blood for the Holy Eucharist, and the water for Holy Baptism. Seeing all that had taken place, Longinus confessed: “Truly this was the Son of God!” According to tradition, Golgotha (“the Place of the Skull”) is where the skull of Adam lay.

Thus, at the foot of the Cross, the blood of Christ mystically cleanses Adam and all mankind from the stain of sin. For Christ, the New Adam, heals by the wood of the Cross the old Adam, who fell by the wood of the tree.
